An Introduction to Thresholds by Gustavo Alvarenga

September 3, 2025 | Categories: BMI Live, Fellowships, Graduate Assistants

Hi! My name is Gustavo Alvarenga, a second year MFA Fiction student at UNLV. This semester I am excited to be working as a Production Assistant with former Shearing Fellow Jordan Kisner for her incredible podcast Thresholds. In my role, I will assist with all stages of podcast creation, from initial concept to listener engagement, including author research, and social media strategy.

For those who don’t know, Thresholds is a series of interviews that asks artists and writers about transformative and life-changing experiences that have shaped their work. Kisner asks artists about their “life-wasn’t-the-same-after-that moment” and explores how those moments manifest in their art. Thresholds is the brainchild of Kisner, who began the podcast in early 2020 and was supposed to be a capsule show of just six interviews. Its popularity grew quickly, however, and now, 5 and a half years later, it’s at around episode 150.

Kisner will be hosting a live show in Las Vegas where she will be interviewing Jayson Greene, author of Once More We Saw Stars. Kisner will sit down with Greene to discuss his upcoming debut novel UnWorld, a speculative story about the blurring between humanity and AI.

The program will take place on September 20th at 3 p.m. at the Beverly Theater in Las Vegas, and will be free to the public. We hope to see you there!
