About the Event

Join Shearing Fellow Alejandro Heredia and BMI on Thursday, September 19th, at 6pm in FDH 109 for a free screening of the classic 1991 New York City ball culture documentary Paris is Burning. The film will begin at 6 PM, followed by a conversation between Alejandro Heredia and Creative Writing MFA student Alex Schechter. They will discuss the film and its influence on Heredia’s writing.

“For so many of us, watching Paris is Burning was the first time we felt we belonged in a trajectory of queer history and lineage. I love this documentary for the way it depicts both the beauty and the high cost that comes with living at the fringe of society. While it’s by no means a perfect project, it serves as an homage to Black and Latinx queer expression, resistance, and struggle, especially for contemporary viewers who are interested in learning about how queer people became foundational to contemporary mainstream culture.”
