BMI offers a variety of ambitious live experiences during the academic semesters, ranging from literary keynotes to colloquies on pressing public questions to surprising blends of ideas, art, and music. Of the 50 or so events offered each year, most are entirely free and open to the public.
BMI has hosted winners of the Nobel Prize, the MacArthur Fellowship, and the Pulitzer alongside breakout writers and local stars.
Our events are often site-specific and genre-bending with the riveting inclusion of musicians, visual artists, and performers of all kinds. BMI regularly partners with friends—including PEN America, the National Book Foundation, the Clark County Poet Laureate, and Meow Wolf—to stretch the bounds of what we do, and to serve wide audiences. BMI breaks from the mold of panel discussions and typical forms because we believe that innovation in expression must be joined to innovative ways for people to gather, interact, and connect.
BMI’s most ambitious undertaking is the annual The Believer Festival; a multi-day roving celebration of writing, music, visual arts. In the heart of the desert of Southern Nevada, established and emerging artists, comedians, literary luminaries, and the Las Vegas arts community come together to divine a creative oasis.
In addition, we offer a variety of staged series as part of our regular fall and spring seasons, including The Believer Presents, featuring authors with recent books of note; Breakout Writers; Neon Lit, produced and hosted by the students of UNLV’s Creative Writing International Program; and a bi-annual Jim Rogers Contrarian Lecture.
